A project that seeks to give the city a sustainable identity.
Once again, wood is used for another landmark in the Biobío region, specifically in the city of Los Ángeles. After inaugurating the largest wooden building in Latin America (which currently houses CMPC’s corporate offices) in 2019, the next step was decided to be taken with a steady focus on sustainable tourism: a sign with the name of the city made 100% of wood. The result? An attractive sign measuring 27 meters long, 4 meters high and weighing two thousand kilos per letter.
How was this titanic operation accomplished? CMPC donated more than 100 cubic meters of Radiata Pine CLT, also known as cross-laminated timber. In this way, this project is the second in Chile with FSC Chain of Custody Project Certification, along with the corporate building. Another interesting fact is that the pieces were covered with Thermo Solutions, a thermo-modified wood, thus providing greater dimensional stability and resistance as well as protection against fungi and termites.
María Olivia Cole, Director of the Los Ángeles Municipal Planning Secretariat, was present at the installation of the signage and she affirmed that “this is an initiative that will give an important look to the entrance to the city. Apart from the cross that has been a very important landmark, now we are going to add the letters to the north entrance.”
For his part, Alfonso Muñoz, CMPC Pulp’s Head of North Territory Forest Community Relations, pointed out that, "the main region of wood production is Biobío and here we are forging an identity for Los Ángeles" and added that he will continue "working on the project of landscaping and lighting,” all in line with the design of the signage, which being made with wood - a noble and renewable material - will give a new face to the entrance of the city.
