Wood: The Best Resource for the Future of Sustainable Construction

Some experts even claim that it is the "only" sustainable option.

Why is it said that wood is the best option for developing sustainable construction? It is not for-tuitous nor is it fanciful. Wood is a noble resource with multiple characteristics that have a posi-tive and direct impact on the environment. Here are some examples:

  • Wood is the only construction material capable of capturing CO2 in its fibers. Instead of emitting it, like many others, it absorbs it.
  • It has unique insulating properties, which translates into greater energy efficiency. This decreases its density, making the weight of the structures significantly less.
  • It is a natural, renewable and organic resource.
  • It is naturally fire and heat resistant.
  • It has an optimal anti-seismic behavior.
  • It reduces construction times by up to 50%, approximately.
  • It contains acoustic properties, thereby minimizing echo in spaces. This is because in-stead of reflecting and amplifying sounds, it absorbs them.
  • The wide range of this material makes it versatile for any type of design.

In the words of Eduardo Hernández, CMPC's Forests-Timber Operations Manager for pagi-nav.cl, “In Chile, unfortunately less than 20% of houses are built with wooden structures. How-ever, in the United States and Canada, it is close to 90%. This gap only goes to show the great potential of increasing its use. This is without even considering that our country is also a large producer of wood, annually producing more than 8 million cubic meters of sawn timber and more than 3 million cubic meters of boards that can be used very competitively in many types of buildings” Highlighting this idea is the CMPC Los Ángeles Corporate building, a living example of how wood construction competes and meets the high international standards of this type of sustainable buildings.

Chile is one of the main producers of wood in the world yet, paradoxically, wood is not a com-mon material in domestic construction. It is easy to industrialize and a good way to start leaving behind other construction materials that leave a greater carbon footprint... So, what are we wait-ing for?
